Carbon Footprint Measurement and Reduction Plan Strategy

Project Start Date: 08/10/2024

Project Target Completion Date: 21/01/2025

Supplier: Maidaid

Maidaid is committed to measuring and reducing its carbon emissions, with a view to achieve Net Zero by 2048 at the latest.

We have partnered with Positive Planet to measure our full scope 1, full scope 2, full upstream scope 3, and partial downstream scope 3 emissions, with the view of creating a Carbon Reduction Plan for the years ahead in a two-phase project.

1. Carbon Emissions Measurement for the Most Recent Financial Period

Data Collection: We will begin by collecting data on our carbon emissions for the most recent financial period and submitting this to Positive Planet for data verification. This data will include information on energy consumption, transportation, waste generation, and other relevant factors.

Carbon Footprint Calculation: Positive Planet will use data to measure all scope 1 and 2 emissions, plus emissions in the following scope 3 categories: purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel and energy related activities, business travel, commuting, waste generated in operations, upstream transportation and distribution, upstream leased assets, downstream leased assets, downstream transportation and distribution, franchises, investments.

2. Development of a Carbon Reduction Plan for the Year Ahead

Setting Reduction Targets: Based on our baseline measurement, we will set specific and measurable carbon reduction targets for the upcoming year and to 2030. These targets shall be ambitious yet realistic, considering our operational needs and environmental goals.

Identifying Key Strategies: We will identify key strategies and initiatives to achieve our reduction targets. This may include adopting energy-efficient technologies, optimising supply chains, encouraging sustainable transportation options, and promoting responsible employee practices.

Resource Allocation: To implement our carbon reduction plan effectively, we will allocate the necessary resources, both financial and human, to support the initiatives and strategies outlined.

Monitoring and Reporting: Regular monitoring and reporting will be crucial to track our progress toward achieving the reduction targets. We will establish a reporting mechanism that ensures transparency and accountability.

Continuous Improvement: We will maintain a commitment to continuous improvement by regularly reviewing and updating our carbon reduction plan as needed, considering new technologies, industry best practices, and evolving sustainability goals.

The first step is to measure our emissions, this will be complete by 24th December 2024. Our Carbon Reduction Plan is on track to be completed by 21st January 2025.

We further believe the completion of this project will give us valuable insight into our current carbon footprint and the reduction strategies required to reduce emissions.

Commitment to achieving Net Zero

  • Maidaid is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2048.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 2023

Additional Details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations.

Maidaid has undergone significant change over the past 12 months and currently has no baseline emissions data, however an external consultant, Positive Planet, has been commissioned to produce a full Carbon Reduction Plan with the goal of ensuring net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This is due to be published by 21st January 2025

Baseline year emissions:

Emissions reduction targets

In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to TBC by plan currently being prepared by Positive Planet tCO2e by 2029. This is a reduction of TBC by plan currently being prepared by Positive Planet %

Progress against these targets can be seen in the graph below – TBC by plan currently being prepared by Positive Planet:

Carbon Reduction Projects

Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2023 baseline. The carbon emission reduction achieved by these schemes equate to TBC tCO2e, a TBC % reduction against the 2023 baseline and the measures will be in effect when performing the contract

Maidaid employs 10 sales professionals who require cars to meet customers. Over a period of time the fleet has been moved from diesel cars to hybrids and at the latest fleet renewal all vehicles have been converted hybrid as a minimum, with 1 fully electric car.

In addition, where possible, sales managers are encouraged to arrange meetings via video link to reduce the travelling and the environmental effect of this.

The development of a new product range focusing on sustainability through the reduction of energy and water use is nearing completion. Features include a new innovative heat recovery system which provides an energy reduction of up to 25%.  These products are due for release within the next year, will be independently verified as market leading for lowest energy consumption and to be recorded on the ETL (Energy Technology List).

Maidaid installed solar panels in 2022 to provide up to 70% of its energy consumption, however the coverage was restricted by energy supply capacity. A new plan is now in place to increase the energy supply infrastructure to allow for expansion of the solar panels.

Through the sourcing of newer, more energy efficient equipment, low energy LED lighting and PIR motion sensors to automatically switch off lighting, energy consumption has been significantly reduced.

The business has removed the requirement to purchase plastic packaging for its products and all ‘void fill’ packaging is now either recycled or is provided from recycled materials.

On a smaller scale, the business has replaced bottled water and watercoolers, that required plastic bottles to be delivered by van, with filtered water machines.  The new machines take water directly from the mains and consumers use water bottles or glasses.

In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:

The business has plans in place to increase the number of solar panels and further reduce its carbon footprint. To do this an increase in the energy supply infrastructure will be required and this is planned early in 2025.

With an increase in energy supply infrastructure, Maidaid will be able to provide EV charging and it is intended to encourage the use of electric vehicles amongst staff that require a car to travel to and from work by offering free of charge EV charging.  The power to offer this will be supplied by the increased solar energy source.

Maidaid has a requirement that new and replacement company vehicles are to have lower greenhouse gas emissions than the vehicle being replaced and where practical full electric vehicles should be sourced.
